The Illa Refuge belongs to the parish of Encamp and is located 2,488 metres above sea level, below the dam of Lake Illa. Opened in 1981, it is located in the heart of Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, officially declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
This mountain staffed shelter has 5 rooms equipped with bunk beds and mattresses: 4 of them can sleep up to 8 people, and the others up to 10. It’s very large and can provide shelter for between 45 and 60 people. There are also showers, toilets, a chimney, telephones and emergency radios to guarantee the safety of guests at all time.
Facilities include a terrace, a bar and a restaurant. All this is designed for the comfort of hikers.
The mountain staffed shelter is accessible from several GR trails (long distance), in particular: GRP, GR7 and GR11. It can also be reached from both Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley and Pessons circle in Civera Valley.
Leaving the Tourist Office of Escaldes-Engordany you can reach the route that connects with GR7 to head into Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, and from there, you continue walking through Coll Jovell. From here, the walk takes about 4 and a half hours and the difficulty is high. To access the shelter, you’ll have to face an elevation difference of 1,290 metres, so you’ll definitely need to be in good physical shape.
The Illa Refuge is open all year round, so it's always a good time to visit, come and see it for yourself!
